Real Estate Agent Safety and Security

Real Estate Agent Safety and Security

by Mike Adams

First of a Multi-Part Series

Christmas Eve I was browsing through the Chicago Tribune and noticed this headline buried on page18 of the paper.

“Thefts alleged on house tours”, by Art Barnum, Staff
Reporter, Chicago Tribune

The article goes on to allege that a fellow named Günther, age 37, went on up to 80 home tours in several cities.  He was charged with taking items from three  homes so far, and more charges are under investigation.    He was turned in to the Police by a Real Estate Salesperson, who had become suspicious….

The agent was on the ball here, and detected suspicious behavior,
unfortunately the alleged took items from at least 3 homes BEFORE the agent reported the incident.  It is apparent to me that the agent was showing houses to a single party, and not in an open house situation.

That reminds me of some of the safety precautions one should take…

  1. Never show a home without another person knowing you itinerary.  This can be fellow agent, your office manager, your company receptionist, the floor person (make sure your info is passed on) or a trusted friend.  That person should call your cell phone from time to time to insure your well being.
  2. Never meet a stranger at a home.  Always meet at your office.
  3. At your office PHOTO COPY the new clients drivers license.  Tell them it is policy, because you will need the info for your daily report. If they refuse that should set off some alarms in your head…Do you really want to take a chance with your safety over a possible deal??
  4. Watch your client as they look at the prospect home.  Do they really need to open bedroom dresser drawers? Are any of the clients actions setting off alarm bells in your head?  If so get away from them and call your office, the police, or both.  Do not confront this person as it could become even more dangerous.
